Communities north of Boston can feel confident knowing that excellent emergency medical care is available close to home, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Emergency Department (ED), which features 30 examination rooms, serves as the main point of entry for most people who come to our facility at 41 Highland Avenue in Winchester. More than 50,000 patients visit our ED each year.
Our skilled and experienced ED physicians are board certified in Emergency Medicine. Our ED nurses are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Winchester Hospital is designated a Primary Stroke Service Hospital by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which means we comply with the latest hospital guidelines for the treatment of stroke.
Additionally, a pediatrician specializing in emergency medicine from Boston Children’s Hospital is on-site every day in Winchester Hospital’s Emergency Department from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m., through a unique partnership between the facilities.
When Time Makes All the Difference
In 2011, a team of Winchester Hospital staff members engaged in an effort to improve turnaround times and wait times in the Emergency Department.
Based on their recommendations, we developed a new way of providing emergency care. Our goals included:
- Treat patients as family
- Bring patients to rooms quickly
- Provide team nursing
- Improve the time it takes for patients to be seen by a doctor
As a result, we now bring patients into rooms about 38% faster, and we have reduced the time it takes for doctors to see patients by about 33%.
Our Patient Satisfaction
Our improvement efforts have paid off for patients. The 2012 Press Ganey patient satisfaction survey results put us in the 99th percentile of hospitals when patient were asked about their likeliness to recommend Winchester Hospital to others.
Here are some patient comments from that Press Ganey survey:
- “I was treated in such a timely manner. I was greatly impressed.”
- “Could not get over the rapid attention and care”
- “Best visit I’ve ever had at Winchester Hospital, I couldn’t wait for this survey to come in…”
Pediatric Medical Emergency Care
In addition to 24-hour pediatrician consultation coverage, a pediatrician specializing in emergency medicine from Boston Children’s Hospital is also on-site in Winchester Hospital’s Emergency Department every day from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Winchester Hospital also has a number of outstanding pediatricians, family practitioners and orthopedic specialists available to assist children after they leave the Emergency Department.
