Using Your Mind to Heal
Winchester Hospital offers professional hypnotherapy services as part of our integrative therapies.
Hypnotherapy is an altered state of consciousness applied in a healing manner. Self-hypnosis is taught in the first or second session, giving you a useful tool for symptom management and behavior modification.
Hypnotherapy is recognized as a valid medical procedure by both the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association. Since 1995, the National Institutes of Health has recommended hypnotherapy as a treatment for chronic pain.
How Hypnotherapy Works
Hypnotherapists use words and images to bring you to a stage of deep relaxation, almost like sleep. At this stage, you are unusually responsive to an idea or image. However, a hypnotherapist cannot control your mind or make you do something you do not want to do.
But while you are in this stage, hypnotherapy can teach you how to master your own state of awareness. This skill helps you control your own physical and psychological responses.
